Meet the Owners:
|
Sue Tuley smiles with pride when she tells the story of the birth of her daughter Jill. "It was in the papers," she says. Jill was born in Arlington, Texas in the front seat of her father Noel's car as he sped his Sue, pregnant and in labor, to the hospital. "There was a big semi truck that kept up alongside us while it was happening," Sue tells. "The trucker was watching with these wide eyes like he just couldn't believe what was going on!" But baby Jill came into the world without a hitch, and by the time they reached the hospital, both mother and daughter were fine. "I did all the work, and my name wasn't even mentioned in the news article!" Sue laughs. "They just called me 'the pregnant wife'." Sue learned to knit when she was in the Girl Scouts and at George Peabody Elementary School in the Oak Cliff/Cockrell Hill area of Dallas. She continued to knit up until the time that she had her 4 children: Jill, Jeff, Kelly and Suzanne. "With four kids and a husband in college, I didn't have the time or the money to knit." Sue explains. It was only after the kids got older that she got back into knitting. It was only after she saw a knitting machine in a shop in London, England that Sue decided it was time to get out of the real estate business and go off on her own. She decided right then that when she got back to the States, she'd start selling knitting machines. Sue and her husband Noel have been married for 47 years now. Although Sue is a native Dallasite, she's lived in Kansas, Washington D.C. and overseas in London as well. Sue's son Jeff, a tree rancher, and daughter Suzanne, a cattle rancher, both live in East Texas. Her son Kelly is a sculptor who lives in Las Vegas but travels all over the world, just like his mom. Sue has 6 grandchildren and 2 miniature schnauzers who are part of the family, Mattie (Maria Theresa) and Eva Mathilda, 3 year old sisters from the same litter. --------------------------------------------Sue's daughter Jill Brown had been in the banking business for a long time when her mother asked if she wanted to run the day to day operations of the Woolie Ewe. Under one condition: that she learn to knit. Jill took a beginner's class three times before it finally clicked. And she's been knitting ever since. Jill met her husband when they were both 18, married shortly thereafter and the marriage is still going strong. Jill has 2 daughters, Audrey and Sarah. She's also the proud owner of two horses, a cat, and two dogs. According to Jill, one of the dogs, a 5 year old cuddly pug named Bandit, qualifies as her third child. Both Sue and Jill love doing what they do. They know their regular customers by name, some of whom travel across the country to visit the store and stock up on yarns for their next big knitting project. And yes, both Sue and Jill knit almost every night because it helps them to relax. Woolie Ewe customers come from all walks of life. As Sue says, "Knitting is the great equalizer - you sit some people down around the table to work and you think they won't get along. But they sit down, and everything melts." "There's a commonality…what they share is the love of creation and how wonderful it is." |
